WJM DIGITAL DONATION DIVERTS WASTE FROM LANDFILL

We are extremely proud to have donated a significant number of computers to an award-winning environmental social enterprise which strives to divert waste from landfill.
Following our Glasgow team’s recent office move to St Vincent Plaza, over 100 PCs have been handed over to the Edinburgh Remakery, where the equipment will be repaired and refurbished.
The computers will then be sold on, with all profits going back to the charity, or gifted to vulnerable groups facing financial hardship.
In 2020 alone, Edinburgh Remakery diverted 123 tonnes from landfill, saved 80 tonnes in Co2 emissions, and distributed 278 free laptops, tablets and smartphones to people in need across Edinburgh living in digital poverty and social isolation, thanks to donations from individuals and businesses. A key priority for this work is to provide the means to stay connected whilst also stopping reusable goods from going to waste.
The charity also offers internships to young people with recognised disabilities, giving them the opportunity to learn valuable IT refurbishment and repair skills, and help them gain access to the job market.
Fraser Gillies, Managing Partner at WJM, said: “This is a fantastic cause and I’m really glad we have been able to support the charity’s incredible work in their local community. As well as helping the digitally excluded, Edinburgh Remakery’s system is also hugely beneficial to the environment, ensuring materials that otherwise may have been sent to landfill are reused, repaired and repurposed.”
A spokesperson from Edinburgh Remakery said: "Not only does donating and reusing these devices have a significant positive impact on the environment by reducing electronic waste – the fastest growing waste stream in the UK, and one of the most polluting – but it also benefits the wider community in tackling digital inequalities.
“The Edinburgh Remakery are committed to using 20% of donated and reusable devices to benefit the community, gifting these to disadvantaged individuals and families across Edinburgh who are experiencing financial hardship and need assistance to get online and access essential support services.
“A portion will also be used to train members of the Edinburgh community in valuable IT repair skills, targeting primarily those furthest from the job market to boost valuable employability skills as well as confidence."
