Renewable Energy Law
Whether it is onshore wind, battery storage, hydro, biomass or solar, our renewable energy law team will be able to advise you. Our industry specialists provide essential strategic advice on property, planning, corporate, tax and agricultural issues for this increasingly vital sector.
SERVICE, EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE
Our Renewables Energy law team offers something different from our competitors.
At the heart of that offering is our partner led service. Our partners look after our clients from the moment they engage the firm all the way through to completion of their projects, remaining closely involved in the outstanding day-to-day service required to deliver our clients’ goals. There is nothing more important to us than looking after our clients.
Of course delivery of those goals and delivery of that service can only be achieved with outstanding individuals. It is led by Andy McFarlane, one of Scotland’s foremost renewable energy lawyers. The partners in our team include Fraser Gillies (our Managing Partner and Head of Planning) Ken Long and Angus Macleod, renewable energy lawyers who are all ranked individuals in Chambers and Legal 500. The work the team delivers is also driven by our excellent associates and solicitors.
AT THE HEART OF THE SECTOR
Renewables is a leading sector in our firm’s overall business plan and has been for a long time. We sit in a network of clients, funders, consultants and industry bodies, taking pride in our sector knowledge. As well as putting on our own conferences and seminars, we attend multiple industry events during the year and deliver training to/receive training from our clients.
BREADTH OF OUR TEAM
We have provided legal advice on all technologies in the renewables sector including onshore wind, battery storage, hydro, offshore wind, tidal, wave, biomass and photovoltaic/solar. Alongside that, our renewable energy law specialists complement our outstanding property, planning and corporate teams. Our clients have had the benefit on major projects of market-leading tax advice from Susan Hoyle and Lizzie Tainsh in relation to environmental issues.
WJM Annual Renewables Seminar
To show our commintment to renewable energy law, we host the WJM Renewables Seminar every year. This year WJM’s annual renewables seminar, Onshore Wind and the Path to Net Zero, was held on COP26’s official Day of Energy.
Speakers at the event included David MacArthur, co-owner of the carbon negative environmental consultancy MacArthur Green, David Bell of David Bell Planning Ltd., chartered landscape architect and founder of MVGLA Marc van Grieken, Fraser Gillies, Managing Partner and Head of Planning at WJM and Andy McFarlane, who heads up WJM’s team of renewables experts.
The highly anticipated NPF4 was a major focus point of the seminar, with each speaker outlining how important the documentation will be in supporting the Government’s objectives to reach its net zero target, and shaping the way in which planning decisions are made by local authorities and Minsters in the future.
As well as planning and policy trends, speakers also discussed peatland carbon and how peatland restoration projects may interfere with the development of onshore wind farms if more of these types of projects are developed in areas where wind farms could be built.
