Day to day, I am involved in the preparation of wills and powers of attorney, estate planning (including advice relating to inheritance tax) and the winding up of estates after death.

I help individuals and families arrange their affairs so as to achieve their aims in the most effective and efficient way.

I have a particular interest in family businesses, and I help families in business to work together to achieve a successful succession - which may, for example, involve the next generation taking over the business, or the business remaining family owned but not family run, or the business being sold into employee ownership.

Recent Activity

WJM's Agricultural & Rural team get out and about in the summer, and I have been flying the WJM flag at various agricultural shows across Scotland.

As a result of these shows, I have been working with a number of farming families and agricultural related businesses to help them manage their personal law needs such as wills, powers of attorney and estate planning.

Allied to this work, I have been involved in a number of consultations with a family business looking to set succession plans in place. Initially, I spent time getting to understand the family and how they felt about the business, both on an individual basis and as a family. I was then able to help guide the business through its issues. One of the crucial stages was advising them on their corporate structure to ensure good governance going forward.
